Synopsis:
Scene I opens with Amadeus Adams, a composer and conductor, coaching a scene from the opera Mignon with Friederike, a countess and singer. As the scene progresses, we begin to perceive the underlying tension between these two–hinting at a previous affair. Friederike brings up rumors of Amadeus’ wife Cecilia’s infidelity. Cecilia has been spending a suspicious amount of time with a younger prince named Sigmund. Sigmund, who was once Amadeus’ student, pines after Cecilia, but she is hesitant to return his affection. The scene closes with the four of them firmly denying that they are keeping any secrets from each other.
In Scene II, a chorus of townspeople shouts out the news of Cecilia’s involvement with the Prince Sigmund. Amadeus overhears their gossiping and announces his intent to challenge Sigmund to a duel. When Amadeus arrives at Sigmund’s home, Sigmund assumes that his former teacher has come to give him a piano lesson. Amadeus initially deceives Sigmund into believing that he wants to hear a waltz, but it is quickly revealed that he has come to issue a challenge. Sigmund is disturbed by the accusations and refuses to duel Amadeus. When asked why he refuses, Sigmund finally admits that Cecilia was only using him as part of a ploy to hurt Amadeus. The scene closes with Sigmund saying a final goodbye to Amadeus.
